How CFII training works
Each step links to the section of the CFII requirements guide that covers it in full.
Prerequisites
You hold a flight instructor certificate. Under 61.183 you are 18 or older, read, speak, write, and understand English, and hold a commercial pilot or airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category and class rating. You also need an instrument rating, or privileges on your pilot certificate appropriate to the instructor rating (61.183(c)(2)(iv)), and at least 15 hours as pilot in command in the category and class (61.183(j)).
No fundamentals of instructing test
Because you already hold a flight instructor certificate, you do not take the fundamentals of instructing test again (61.191(b) and 61.183(e)(1)), and you do not log that ground training again (61.185(b)(1)).
The knowledge test
You pass one knowledge test, on the areas of 61.185(a)(2) and (a)(3) that apply to the instrument rating (61.183(f)). Before you sit it, an instructor endorses you for it (61.35).
Ground training
61.185(a)(3) asks for ground training from an authorized instructor, logged, on the aeronautical knowledge areas for the instrument rating in the airplane category.Davide Zambiasi gives it one on one at $65/hr.
Flight training and the proficiency endorsement
You log flight and ground training on the ten areas of operation in 61.187(b)(7), from the fundamentals of instructing and a preflight lesson on a maneuver to instrument approach procedures and emergency operations. When you are ready, Davide Zambiasi endorses your logbook that you are proficient to pass a practical test on those areas (61.187(a)).
The practical test
An examiner gives the practical test in an aircraft representative of the category and class for the rating (61.183(h)(1)).
